Judging the Tesla Roadster and Chevy Volt by different standards

There has long been an interesting paradox in the realm of cars. For some peculiar reason, people who buy really expensive cars are willing to make more compromises to the foibles of the car and cut them more slack. How else to explain grief that owners of Italian exotics withstood for decades in terms of reliability, ergonomics and build quality. Buyers of mainstream cars that often have far fewer problems as a percentage of the number of vehicles built have a fit at every little thing that goes wrong. That same paradox exists today. The Tesla Roadster by virtue of its price and performance falls into entry level of exotic cars. Despite numerous delays in getting the car into production, and obvious compromised in terms of its functionality, most people have been willing to cut the car and the company a lot of slack, myself included. In my case my experience in the auto industry allows me to understand the difficulty of the task Tesla had. I never actually expected them to meet their aggressive timing targets and I’ve written on numerous occasions about the potential problems they might have. Nonetheless most people believed in the company.

General Motors on the other hand faces an entirely different standard with the Volt. In spite having a much more complex vehicle to develop with a much greater level of functionality and a shorter time frame than Tesla, GM seems to be being held to a higher standard than Tesla. At the slightest hint of time slips or cost increases, so many people jump on GM thinking that the car will never happen. Admittedly, we have yet to see a running prototype of the Volt (although they do apparently now exist) but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t fully committed to making the car happen. GM’s task of creating a car that will be an affordable mainstream sedan for four passengers that meets modern standards will strangely mean that customers actually expect it to work all of the time. That’s a situation that the much more expensive Tesla won’t face to nearly the same degree.

GM offers up to $200 million to end American Axle strike

General Motors has been hit so hard by the ongoing American Axle strikes that it’s stopped production of the GMC Yukon, Denali, Sierra heavy-duty regular and extended cab, its commercial-duty pickup and variants of Chevrolet trucks and Tahoes. All the while, the General is still negotiating with the UAW over local contracts at some of its most important plants. To ease some of its supply problems, General Motors has reportedly offered as much as $200 million to American Axle for the funding of employee buyouts, early retirements and for the support of wage buy downs. The offer, however, is conditional on a quick resolution between American Axle and the UAW.

Spokesman Dan Flores says that GM hopes “the offer will help bridge the gap between American Axle and the UAW and that they will be able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement in the near future.” Both the UAW and American Axle sound supportive of the investment; Bill Alford Jr., vice president and incoming president at UAW Local 235 says, “We’re happy that General Motors is finally coming to the table and realizing that they have a stake in American Axle’s future.” For GM’s sake and that of the striking workers, we hope the feuding companies find an amicable solution soon, though it seems unfortunate that GM, which is not exactly posting record profits itself, should need to cough up funding to make it happen.

AutoblogGreen for 05.09.08

Man, the dangers of the new automotive world: confusing ethanol for biodiesel and kids hitting the silent Prius. Over in London, a new electric taxi is not going to be worth it to 60 percent of the cab drivers who need more oomph than the 100-mile range the batteries can provide. Still, that means 40 percent could use it. Sweet.

Harley-Davidson XR1200

  Article summary:
Page 1 :  Harley-Davidson XR1200

Page 2 :  Harley-Davidson’s XR1200 delivers Flat Track (…)

Page 3 :  Key features & technical highlights

Harley-Davidson’s latest racing success shows inspiration behind new model launch

In 1970 Harley-Davidson introduced a new 750cc, 4 speed, 90 bhp V-twin engine motorcycle specifically for flat track racing, the XR750. Little did the engineers realise that the bike they had produced would go on to become the world’s most successful flat track bike, destined to dominate championships from the early 1970’s through to the present day.

The XR750’s success was underlined again (in 2007) with Kenny Coolbeth’s second successive victory in the US flat track racing series. Coolbeth, from Connecticut led a one-two-three for the Harley Davidson ’Wrecking Crew’ team this year along with team mates Jared Mees and Bryan Smith.

With the launch of the XR1200 scheduled for 2008, there’s never been a better time to celebrate the racing heritage that the new XR1200 model is built upon. With the XR750’s unrivalled race winning DNA in its genes the XR1200 is sure to take the motorcycle world by storm. Since its prototype launch in Germany in 2006 dealers and customers have been waiting to see the finished product with an anticipation fuelled by excitement.

The XR750’s on-track success is unquestionable. Piloted by a multitude of riders down the years, the bike has won 28 of the past 36 AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) championships.

"Kenny Coolbeth’s success this season further enhances the Harley-Davidson XR750’s reputation as the most successful race motorcycle of all time", commented Matthew Knott of Harley-Davidson Europe. "The incredibly positive reaction we’ve had to the XR1200 prototype certainly suggests that there is growing interest in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle which has been inspired by the racing line, and we’re looking forward to launching the bike in 2008" Knott added.

Flat Track racing is an all-American series where bikes compete on a 1 mile hard packed dirt oval circuit. As in European speedway, bikes slide round the corners spinning their back wheels for balance - although unlike its European equivalent, cornering speeds are often much higher, with some bikes travelling around the oval at speeds in excess of 120mph. The bikes used are powered by a 750cc V-Twin engine mounted in a special flat track chassis, and to keep the riders on the edge of their seats the bikes possess no front brakes.

The series runs throughout the US Summer months, with the first race usually scheduled in March and the season finale in late September or early October. The spiritual home of Flat Track racing is in Springfield, Illinois, at the Fairgrounds Mile where the first AMA championship was held in 1937.

The series is also seen as a launch pad for careers in MotoGP, with international stars like Nicky Hayden and Kenny Roberts both starting their racing careers on the Flat Track circuit.

Harley-Davidson’s works team, nicknamed the ’Wrecking Crew’ has been a key part of the Flat Track scene since 1914. The most successful member of the Wrecking Crew is Scott Parker who has claimed a record breaking 9 championships in the series. Kenny Coolbeth’s second successive victory in the AMA series this year puts him hot on the heels of Scott Parker as the most successful series rider of all time.

20 year old Kenny commented on his 2007 championship title; "It takes an amazing group of people to do what we did this season. Winning the second championship feels just as good as the first one. Our team wants to keep doing this and we’ve already put our focus on next season."

When William S. Harley first entered Harley-Davidson motorcycles in a racing championship in 1914 the team was quick to establish their authority by winning races and championships in a few short years. "Harley-Davidson motorcycles were raced almost from the very beginning of the company, first by independent owners, and then by an official racing department in 1914," said Bill Jackson, Manager of Harley-Davidson Archives.

The Wrecking Crew, was so dominant on race weekends that the name has stuck all the way through to the team led by Coolbeth, Jared Mees and Bryan Smith today.

Volvo V70 2.5 FlexiFuel Turbo police car

Visitors at today’s GreenFleet Arrive ‘n’ Drive event at Rockingham are able to experience an impressive range of Volvo cars, including the new Volvo V70 2.5 FlexiFuel Turbo (FT) 200bhp police car, developed by Volvo to the specific requirements of the Emergency Services as part of its environmentally-friendly FlexiFuel offer. Joining this new model at the event is the C30 SportsCoupe, S40 saloon and V50 Sportswagon, all equipped with Volvo’s 1.8 FlexiFuel engine, and the Volvo V70 2.0 FlexiFuel estate.

The new Volvo V70 2.5FT model is available to order in June 2008 and combines all the established benefits of Volvo’s unique V70 Police Specification build with the environmental consciousness of a FlexiFuel engine which, thanks to its turbo-charged power, means no compromise on performance either. The V70 2.5FT produces 300Nm of torque at 1500-4500rpm, a top speed of 130mph and 0 to 60mph in 7.6 seconds.

Volvo Car Corporation is a major supplier to the Swedish Police and already provides a range of E85 vehicles to meet the Government requirement for all police districts to operate a minimum of 20% FlexiFuel vehicles. Volvo Car UK has a long association with the UK police service, and has also been working with the National Association of Police Fleet Managers (NAPFM) to deliver a Turnkey solution, which can produce a road policing car fitted out ready for service in around eight weeks.

Sarah Tottle, Volvo Special Vehicle Manager, says, “With our ongoing commitment to provide the Emergency Services in the UK and Europe with vehicles that meet their specific requirements, it was a natural and logical step forward for Volvo to offer a FlexiFuel version of our most popular Emergency Services model.”

John Bradley MBE, Press Officer for the National Association of Police Fleet Managers and Fleet Manager for Hampshire Constabulary has already stated that Police Fleet Managers will be extremely interested in the Volvo V70 2.5FT police car.

He says, “The NAPFM Five Year plan incorporates a strategy to reduce UK police fleet carbon footprints. The introduction of this new FlexiFuel Volvo will allow Police Fleet Managers to consider this model as an alternative fuel option against new diesel technology, hybrids and LPG.”

Fleets adopting vehicles powered by alternative fuels, such as E85 will see a variety of benefits. E85 will assist fleets in achieving a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions, a government target for 2010, without the need to change driver behaviour, or compromising their driving enjoyment and comfort.

Caring for the environment has been part of Volvo’s philosophy for many years. The need to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, such as petrol and diesel oil, has long driven Volvo to develop a wide range of alternative fuels and technologies. FlexiFuel is one of Volvo’s latest innovations which allow cars to run on E85, a fuel that consists of 85% bioethanol and 15% regular petrol. Drivers will enjoy the same power output and comfort whether the car is running on E85, petrol, or any mix of both.

The Uno: One Unique Ride…now with a small video

If I was to describe “The Uno” in three words those would be sharp, single and stylish.

It is all due to the fact that although it works like a Segway it looks like Hayabusa’s small and single-wheeled brother. It is an absolute brand new custom machine and makes an impressive entry with the sport-like riding position offered (footpegs are way behind while the seat and handlebars are what you would expect to find on your daily sportbike).

In order to keep good balance there are two side-by-side wheels with custom rims while the orange and grey color scheme elected for it won’t have it pass unnoticed at any Motorcycle Show. Its first was in Toronto.

What is the most amazing related to it is the fact that as creator it has an 18 year old, Ben J. Poss Gulak.

BMW X6 sold out

Even if many people do not understand the meaning of the new X6, BMW announced today that the BMW X6 had been already sold out for this year. According to the company, BMW plans to produce 40,000 units in average worldwide in a full production year during the product’s lifecycle. Half of the worldwide production quota will be reserved for U.S sales.

Surprising that the X6 is sold out? Well, not really, most of the U.S dealerships sold their cars within the first week and there is a waiting list already at some of them. Wait until the X6 xDrive50 hits the showrooms. No one really believed that the X6 will be such an outstanding car.

The BMW X6 will be available in two engine variants: the xDrive50i (4.4 V8 engine, 400 hp, 450lb.-ft torque) and the xDrive35i (3.0 inline six-cylinder engine, 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft torque), both with Twin Turbo and direct injection.
