Take a drink from a recycled windshield

Monday, May 12th, 2008

We all know that dropping our old cars in landfills instead of reusing the valuable resources that make up the mass is not good. The EU has, indeed, a directive that forces 85 percent of cars to be recyclable at the end of their lifespan. In case you’re wondering just what might be the result of all this recycling, here’s something that caught our interest. UncommonGoods has created a series of wine and beer glasses, plus a fishbowl, that are made from used windshields. These don’t come as cheap (and some are out of stock) but they’re nice and can be delivered almost everywhere. Just remember that if you are driving, be careful what you drink from them before getting behind the wheel.

Shai Agassi to drive Project Better Place prototype on Sunday in Tel Aviv

Saturday, May 10th, 2008
One of the launching points for Shai Agassi’s Project Better Place is in Israel and it looks like the first tangible progress might be demonstrated this weekend. The CEO of PBP is planning to drive a prototype electric car that is being developed at around noon on Sunday at the Fairgrounds and Conference Center in Tel Aviv Israel. Agassi will apparently provide an update on the status of the project to develop both electric cars and a charging infrastructure. Israel is just one of a number of countries to express interest in the program. According to Israeli President Shimon Peres, the hope is to have electric vehicles on the road in Israel by 2010. If any readers happen to be in Tel Aviv on Sunday and catch this send us a report.

Continental says “good chance” to win Volt battery contract

Friday, May 9th, 2008
Even though GM has said it will wait until late 2008 to name the battery supplier for the Chevy Volt, Continental CEO Manfred Wennemer told Reuters on Thursday that he believes his company has a “good chance” of winning the fight with LG Chem / CPI. Of course, it’s no surprise that a CEO would talk up his company’s chances, but winning the Volt contract will be a huge coup to whoever wins it. Wennemer said that not winning won’t kill the company, but “it would be very, very important for us to be the one,” he said. Winning the Volt deal would see Conti build a production plant in the U.S., Wennemer said. Since both Continental and CPI packs seem to be doing fine in the testing lab, there is probably a lot of number crunching and haggling going on behind closed doors to figure out which supplier can deliver the right packs to GM for the right cost.

2008 Cheetah Coupe

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Remember Cheetah? (No, not Cheeta, Tarzan’s monkey!) The car built in the 60s to compete with the Cobra! Well, if you don’t know nothing about Bill Thomas’ factory you will have plenty of time to find out about it as the car is making a come back!

How about a Corvette pick-up?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

It happened to a BMW M5 and also to a Porsche 928, so why not to a Corvette C4? If you like speed, but you also have a lot of stuffs to carry, the Corvette pick-up is the best option! That if you want to spend like $115.000 to create it!

It was assembled combining a 1984 Corvette front end and a 1991 corvette rear end with a functional tailgate. Munci 4 speed and custom wheels and tires. This car was purchased from an heir to the Bayliner estate.

The pick-up is for sale, for $35.000 negotiable! Something does not sound right in here, no?

Cars.com finds a TerraPass fleet is the right move

Friday, May 9th, 2008
How much carbon does the fleet of vehicles over at KickingTires spew? For starters, about 26 tons. That’s at least what the Cars.com team has decided is the right amount of Terrapass carbon offsets to buy for the fleet, and senior editor Dave Thomas said that this initial purchase will be reviewed as the cars’ emissions are more accurately rated in the coming months. He told AutoblogGreen that he expects he’ll need to buy more to round out the year, but for now, at least, when Cars.com reviews a huge SUV, somewhere an angel gets its wings a tree is planted.

In a blog post announcing the passes, they write that this purchase isn’t trying to get on anyone’s good side (although I’ve gotta say I approve), but “the main reason for this program is to help the environment for future generations of drivers.” Oh, and the challenge to other review outlets to do the same? Clever. We don’t exclusively focus on reviews here, but we do our share. Just might have to consider this for our own green selves.
