Unless this “watermelon” version of the Daewoo Lanos is some kind of promotional vehicle (doubt it though as there are no decals of the sort), the…

Spy Shots: GM’s 7-passenger global people mover

Thursday, April 17th, 2008
Brenda Priddy & Co have brought us the first glimpse of GM’s upcoming 7-seat MPV. Based on the Delta global platform, it is said to be about the same size as the Mazda5. The person hauler is apparently the work of GM Daewoo (GMDAT), with R&D work carried out in Bupyeong, South Korea.

The vehicle will be offered for numerous GM brands around the world, though no one knows yet exactly which ones will get it. Chevy is certain, with Daewoo and Opel posed as logical outlets. Priddy guesses that this could even be the replacement for the Opel Zafira. It will most likely be built in the Hamtramck, Michigan plant. True, it’s only a taped-up mule and there are parts missing – like the front end – but we hope GM doesn’t go to far down the bland route in order to appeal to the widest number of global villagers.

VIDEO: There’s a Chevy Matiz in this ad, somewhere (NSFW)

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Click above to view video

You may not want to watch this at the office if you work in a puritanical professional environment, but we swear there’s a car in this commercial somewhere. We just don’t seem to notice it, no matter how many times we watch the video. (Believe us, we’ve tried.)

The commercial airs on Greek television supposedly to advertise the newly redesigned Chevrolet Matiz. The first-generation Matiz started life as a Daewoo, the Korean carmaker that General Motors took over and now uses its cars across Europe with Chevrolet badges. The original design was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign as the Lucciola, originally proposed to Fiat for a new Cinquecento. (We’re glad Fiat passed.) The ad, as you can see for yourself in the video after the jump, relies heavily on the old adage “sex sells”. But while the commercial certainly makes us want something, like the Nissan ad of which it reminds us, we’re not sure it’s a car.

What Used Vehicles Sell for $2,500 in the U.S.

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By Michelle Krebs

Car buyers in India will be able to get a spanking-new car for $2,500 when the Tata Nano goes on sale in India later this year. So what kind of vehicle can American car buyers purchase for $2,500?

Edmunds.com’s data department researched what used vehicles were out on the market that cost between $2,000 and $2,500. The list turned out to be long ― long-gone nameplates; vehicles from gone-extinct brands; European classics; cheap sports cars; old standbys; and haulers of all sorts.

Our research found loads of blasts from the past. Remember Daewoo? Eagle? Plymouth? And, of course, Oldsmobile. Now add Isuzu to that list.

It discovered 1980s vintages of some European classics such as Jaguar XJs, BMW 3-, 5- and 7-Series models, Audi and Mercedes-Benz models. We also uncovered some cheap sports cars just for fun.

The bulk of their finds fell in the hauling category ― from small trucks and vans to big ones ―  many from the 1990s as well as old standbys.

Here’s a sampling of what used vehicles are out there for up to $2,500, listed with their model years:

Micro to become macro? GM looking at competing with the Nano

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

If everyone else is going to build cars like Tata’s headline-grabbing Nano, GM’s going to pile on, too. The Lutz cites GM’s part-ownership stake in Wuling Motors, a Chinese manufacturer of sub-$3,000 utility vehicles as a possible source of a GM Nano competitor. Lutz went on to say that one way to make an inexpensive car for the developing world is to repurpose a legacy platform that has become obsolete. The tooling and design will have long been paid off, and there’ll be plenty of experience from the manufacturing side, too. This is essentially what GM China is already doing with the Daewoo Matiz/Chevrolet Spark. It might smack of dumping an old product that isn’t safe or clean enough for mature markets, but is “good enough” in other parts of the world. That said, it could also be a way to maximize the life of an investment while also providing developing markets with a better product than they’d have otherwise. Lutz also called into question whether the average Nano would sell for its rock-bottom $2,500 price of entry, anyway. Adding extra amenities will likely push the price of most Nanos higher, says Bob.
