Will Volkswagen produce its first motorcycle? Very likely

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

The German car manufacturer has big plans for producing something close to what you see in the picture above and it is all part of a strategic alliance with KTM.

Things are as simple as they can get. Remember the X-Bow? The Austrian’s manufacturer first attempt at a road car involved engineers from VW and was powered by the 2000cc turbo engine of the Audi TT sports car. In order to pay back in experience, KTM will do the same thing for Volkswagen: offer an engine and the necessary know-how for a successful bike to hit the production bike and go up against the already notorious BMW.

And if you’re thinking that this is the giant’s only big plan, there’s something to read about and have a radical change of opinion. The GX-3 hybrid, which was a concept only two years ago at the Los Angeles Motor Show, now appears as heading to production with its daring looks combining elements of a car and motorcycle.

And if it does end up on the showroom’s floors, buyers will be in for the riders of their live times as the low and light piece of machinery is being powered by an 1600cc motor developing a decent 125bhp. Having the comfort of a car and the handling of a motorbike was always a great aiming point for builders all over the worlds so the question remains: is VW going be the first to break the ice?

Volkswagen to produce its first-ever motorcycle

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Volkswagen is set to team up with KTM to develop its first ever motorcycle. KTM’s first attempt at a road car, the track-biased X-Bow, was developed with help from VW’s engineers, and even makes use of the 2.0-litre turbo from the Audi TT. So is time to return the favor!

The two-wheeler would pitch VW head-to-head with fellow German giant BMW, which is already established in the motorcycle industry.

Also the three wheels GX-3 concept unveiled at the 2006 Los Angeles Motor Show is back on the agenda. And the three-wheeler could be just the vehicle driving enthusiasts of the future are looking for. As it has a lightweight chassis, a frugal 125bhp 1.6-litre engine would provide searing performance – and all this with the ground-hugging stance of a roadster and the manoeuvrability of a motorbike

Brazil starts pro-ethanol diplomatic offensive

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Brazil is going to try really hard to convince the world that Brazilian sugarcane ethanol is just great. The Latin American giant is about to start what they’re calling a “diplomatic offensive” that will culminate in a World Biofuels Summit from November 17th to 21th in São Paulo.

According to André Caranha Correa, Chancelor’s Director of Energy, there isn’t enough information out there on Brazilian ethanol. First of all, Correa said, it should be excluded from the world rise of feedstocks. He also said that Brazil started working with ethanol in 1975 after the 1973 oil crisis, so it’s a well-known and proven technology / solution. He compared sugarcane with USA’s corn-based ethanol, saying the U.S. fuel could affect food prices. He insisted that ethanol is more environmental friendly than gasoline, even denying that the Amazon forest was being destroyed to produce sugarcane (maybe not, but don’t forget this). As for the poor work conditions we’ve heard about, Correa said that these were completely against Brazilian legislation and that the Goverment was performing routine inspections to put an end to the dreadful situations.

Why is Brazil doing this? Remember that Brazil is fighting to export its ethanol into the EU. The “diplomatic offensive” aims to respond to all kind of attacks and defend the sustainability of this biofuel.

30 Drivers to Race Clean Diesel Volkswagens in Canada
HERNDON, VA – The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup will make its international debut May 16-18, 2008 at Mosport International Raceway in the second race of this all-new series. After completing the inaugural race at VIRginia International Raceway in April, this next race promises to be an exciting one with drivers attempting to improve upon their initial experiences with their clean diesel Jetta TDI vehicles.

MCA ALA 50 supercar debuts in Monaco

Monday, May 12th, 2008

As perhaps many of you have heard Monaco is the place where you can find some of the world’s most exclusive and expensive cars. Sovereign Prince Albert II just revealed a new super car prototype named ALA 50 meant to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the local automaker, Monte Carlo Automobile.

The design of the new ALA 50 is signed by Fulvio Maria Ballabio, the founder of the company, who work together with Guglielmo and Roberto Bellasi. The new model is 100% made of carbon-fiber and features a 650 hp V8 engine originally developed by Christian Contzen, an ex boss of Renault Sport.

Fulvio and its team intend to release the car for the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours race and they announce to start a limited production of a road- going version very soon after, if the car achieves the success expected.

MCA ALA 50: Monaco’s homegrown supercar

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Monaco is a name and a place synonymous with fast cars. Between the obscenely wealthy residents and high-profile races like the Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo rally, the tiny Mediterranean principality probably has more horsepower per acre than any other place on earth. The glitz and glamor has left little room for industry, however, so the high performance machinery regularly seen on the boutique and casino-strewn streets of Monte Carlo has all been imported. All those Ferraris and Aston Martins may, however, face some stiff competition soon from a homegrown enterprise launching a Monaco-made supercar of its own.

The Monte Carlo Automobile ALA 50 was unveiled by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco in celebration of his 50th birthday this past March. Not unlike Bugatti or Spyker, the new Monegasque supercar (seriously, that’s what you call someone from Monaco) revives the name of the principality’s first automaker, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. As expected, the chassis and bodywork (looking something like a cross between a Mosler and a GM EV-1) are constructed entirely of carbon fiber, while motivation comes from a 650hp V8 built by two F1 engine gurus. MCA hopes to campaign the car with three Monegasque drivers at Le Mans in 2010. We’ll be watching.

Volkswagen to offer three-years of free maintenance on 2009 models

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Despite what VW fanbois will tell you, the People’s Car people have had some serious reliability issues over the last few years. Volkswagen execs are hoping to change the automaker’s expensive to maintain image with a vehicle maintenance program that will provide owners of new, 2009 models with free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, along with regular checkups every 6,000 miles or 90 days. Volkswagen is calling it the “Carefree Maintenance Program” and is touting it as the only program of available among its competitors. Considering that the VW Rabbit just took the top spot away from the Mazda3 in ConsumerReports‘ hatchback battle, this might be a good time to start specing up a new GTI.
